About oni

Who are we?

Oni is a family business based in our custom built workshop in Brighton. We build kitchens, furniture, garden spaces (and the screws they sit on) and everything in between.

Oni was started by Steve after 18 years in the City in various COO & CTO roles at private banks, wealth management firms and fintechs.

With a diverse background in implementing automation, operational excellence and private client levels of customer service we have transferred all this experience and more to try and build a fantastic cabinet and woodworking business. With automation and robotics we are able to hit high street price points with bespoke finishes. It is also a wonderful excuse to buy power tools and you can never have enough!

What we do

We design, create and install fully bespoke kitchens, garden rooms and furniture. Combining state of the art CNC* milling with traditional hand cut joinery and finishing.

We also offer B2B services and can provide everything from ground screw installation through to CNC cutting.

Some of the things we can make:

  • Kitchens

  • Dining Tables

  • Chairs and stools

  • Fitted wardrobes

  • WFH spaces

  • Hardwood fencing

  • Garden rooms and office pods

  • Custom signs

What makes us different?

  • Our prices are on our website. Inspired by my favourite tailor, the Cad and the Dandy, the first on Saville Row to do so.

  • We do flat pricing. The price you see is the price you pay.**

  • Everything is fully and highly specified by default with no upsell, extras, or finishing touches required. No-one likes clicking on a kitchen price to find that it doesn’t include drawers, appliances, handles or installation.

  • Absolutely no double-dipping***.

  • No stuffiness. This may be your first foray into bespoke anything and we want it to be a process you enjoy and not one you feel intimidated by.

Why this approach?

  • By basing our pricing on small, medium and large rather than pricing every single cabinet and component we save a huge amount of time and money on the quoting process. This cost saving is passed on to the customer.

  • If a customer walks in the door knowing the kitchen will be within their budget then you can focus all your efforts on a design without them worrying about blowing the budget and constraining themselves. We just include everything you would want as standard.

  • There is nothing worse than going through all the bespoke design process and sales pipeline to find out the actual price is much higher than your budget after you have gotten excited about your kitchen.

When are you available?

We have the capacity to do between 10 and 20 kitchens per year depending on size and scale. If you have a look on our front page you can see the next available build slot.

What does the name mean?

An oni (鬼おに) is a kind of yōkai, demon, orc, ogre, or troll in Japanese folklore. They are typically portrayed as hulking figures with one or more horns growing out of their heads….

…Actually there were a few O’Neills in my primary class and I joined late. Not been able to shake the name since.

* Basically robots

** I bet you were expecting a surprise down here. Sorry to disappoint. Even if we discover your electrical wiring is made of tinfoil and your plumbing is taped together Pringle tin. If this means losing money on 10% of projects by honouring a price when things go wrong or get complicated then so be it.

*** I abhor kick backs, and inflating prices of other people’s work. If you want my plasterer to skim your hallway while they are in you pay the price I pay. Plus, probably, some hobnobs and tea.
